Dzogchen Divisions
The Three Series — སྡེ་གསུམ
The Three Series
The Dzogchen teachings are traditionally organized into three main divisions, known as the Three Series (sde gsum).
Semde
སེམས་སྡེMind Series
Focuses on recognizing the nature of mind. Through calm abiding and analytical meditation, the practitioner comes to understand that all experiences arise from the mind and that the mind itself is empty, luminous, and unobstructed.
Longde
ཀློང་སྡེSpace Series
Emphasizes resting in the open expanse of awareness. It goes beyond conceptual analysis to settle in the vast, boundless nature of mind — like the sky without center or periphery.
Menngagde
མན་ངག་སྡེInstruction Series
Also known as the Upadesha Series, this is the most direct and essential division. It includes the practices of Trekchö (Cutting Through) — resting in the natural state of rigpa; and Tögal (Crossing Over) — practices involving spontaneous vision.
The Menngagde is considered the heart of Dzogchen. It is through this series that the most profound pointing-out instructions are transmitted from master to student.
