Dzogchen Practice
Three essential stages from recognition to rainbow body
Three Essential Stages
The practice of Dzogchen can be understood through three essential stages.
Recognition
(Ngo sprod)The practitioner receives the direct introduction to the nature of mind from a qualified master. This is the crucial first step — without recognition, practice has no basis.
Training
(Nyams len)Having recognized the natural state, the practitioner trains in sustaining that recognition through formal meditation sessions and through integration with daily life. Obstacles and subtle obscurations are gradually cleared.
Integration
(Rang grol)At the fruition stage, recognition becomes continuous and effortless. All experiences — thoughts, emotions, perceptions — are recognized as the play of awareness and self-liberate upon arising.
Ultimate Fruition
The ultimate fruition of Dzogchen practice is the attainment of the Rainbow Body ('ja' lus), in which the practitioner's physical form dissolves into rainbow light at the time of death — a sign of complete realization.
